Finals Schedule

Here's my life for the next two and a half weeks.
Conclusion: Next week will be insane. Finals week will be relaxing.

I didn't get the Pixar internship.

Oh well... there's always next year?? lawl.

Fat Cat's Dilemma: part I

So I'm taking this decal on how to use Maya, a 3D modeling and animation program that big time companies like Pixar use. By the end of the class, we're supposed to have a short film. My group is making one about a cat who can't get on the bed because he's too fat. lawl.

Here's what I've been working on.

The only things I didn't do in this room was the night stand next to the bed, and shade the purple cat clock. But other than that I did all the modeling, lighting, texturing/shading, etc.

But I didn't make the cat. But it looks insanely awesome

Portfolio

Here it is. Not bad for 3 weeks worth of drawing.
=====
At the post office, this was my ticket. Is it a sign??? I think Earl Stevens a.k.a. E Feezy is trying to tell me something.

This is it

2AM. This is the last night I'll be working on the Pixar Portfolio. I have to send it in tomorrow. I still have to do a few drawings. I still have to layout every page. I still have to write my cover letter.
My hand hurts. It's going to be a long night.
=====
4AM. I finished drawing. My scanner decided not to work, so I'm downloading a driver. I hope it works after that. I'll take a nap while I wait for it to download.
=====
5AM. Great. It looks like the Wacom tablet drivers conflict with my scanner's. I don't know what to do.. :(
=====
10AM. I fell asleep and just woke up. I got my scanner to work. I had to install a patch (which I did after uninstalling and reinstalling the printer's drivers). I'm skipping class, which I feel really bad about. I also left the door unlocked last night, which I feel really bad about. I also wore my pajama pants inside out... which was fine, I guess. Laying out the pages... NOW
=====
3PM. Still doing layout. :( I'm not going to send it in today, am I?
=====
2AM The next day. I finished my portfolio (I guess). I would have loved to add many more pages, but time has run out. Plus skipping all this class and work is making me feel so guilty.

Farm

Howdy folks. This took me longer than I thought it would. And it's not what I said I was going to do.
Oh well, I liked how it turned out. I tried to go for a more simple look.

Forest - DONE

Hello.

So I finished the forest with the 50s children explorers.
I'm not entirely satisfied with how it turned out, but WHATEVER. I'm not spending anymore time on it.

Next, I'm trying to do a repertoire two character's expressions/emotions. Woo fun. I wanted to do a college party scene with a bunch of caricatured people, but it seems like too much work for the time frame I have. Instead I'm going to do a bunch of caricatured people (without the environment). I'm sending this in two and a half days. Oh crap, and I gotta layout every page.

oh my. :O

I'm hungry

First off, I'm sorry if anyone started worrying about me from my last post. I'm fine!

Anyways, I skipped work today so I could draw. I finished a "quickie" drawing... that took me 5+ hours. It's inspired by this recent rain that we've been having.

And I've still been working on the forest scene. It's coming along slowly but surely.

So I'm thinking I'll include another quickie and a ton more character designs. I've been looking at other blogs. This girl got into the art program, and didn't include any traditional art. This is what I'm up against. My goal is to finish my portfolio and send it in by this Sunday... but we'll see if I'm able to stick to deadlines. ha.

Thoughts

So I half-heartedly applied to the Pixar Technical Director internship. It's a position that I might like to have in the future, so I figured I might as well apply. Slapped together a portfolio, pooped out a cover letter, and kind of half expected not to be contacted. Well, I wasn't contacted. I'm not totally disappointed because the position didn't really fit me or my portfolio, but I'm kind of questioning if they'll even consider me for the art internship.

I started thinking about how important this is for me. My ability to draw is something I take a lot of pride in. I get defensive when my artistic taste is criticized, and sad if people don't especially notice my work. It's something that's taken me so many years to develop - I've been drawing all my life. Sure, I've never really been the smartest kid, but I've been always known as the "artist" at school.

This reminds me of the poetry anthology cover competition in middle school. I spent a couple nights drawing my entry. My brother persuaded me to scan it and color it digitally. I expected everyone to be impressed and to win by a landslide. My design only got 1 or 2 votes. I tried to complain to friends, but they all agreed that my drawing wasn't all that great (and said I cheated because I used the computer). This was definitely something I wasn't used to. In middle school my classmates would want me to draw crappy anime girls in their yearbooks, and in elementary school they'd be amazed at how well I could copy Dragonball/Sailormoon pictures. People usually liked my drawings, but this time that wasn't the case. I was crushed. I cried for a good hour or two that day.

I hope the same thing doesn't happen again with the Pixar internship. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, but something tells me I won't be able to face the reality that I might not be good enough.

Magical Forest Time

Emm, so I take it back. I got a lot of drawing done. Sort of. lawl.

Here's a study of the different plants I'm going to have in this forest. I particularly like how the mushrooms turned out.

Ryan suggested the kids should be from the 1950s. Below is a sketch of what they'll look like.
And I've started the final drawing. The girl is looking at the mushrooms (or something) and the boy is like "GURL WHATCHU DOIN SHOOO"

My roommate had some fun with my tablet too.

SHOOO

So I went to the Pixar infosession last Wednesday. It was mostly centered on computer science related internships, which kind of sucked (for me, at least). They probably only said 2 sentences about anything art related. It also made me really realize what a far-fetched dream this is for me. Everyone was on their best behavior trying to suck up to the Pixar reps. Gross. But I did find it amusing to hear all the CS majors worrying about not being artistic. har har.

Oh and I got a Wall-E paddle thing. Cool?

On another note, I thought I would have so much time to draw and work on my Pixar portfolio this weekend, but school always finds a way to mess things up. It looks like Sunday is pretty much taken up by two group projects, and the rest of this week will be full of working on my construction project. I'm finding it really hard to look for jobs when school keeps trying to screw me over. NOT COO. SHOOOOO

I need to send this thing in by the end of next weekend, and it is not looking good. Anyways this is what I threw together in like 2 hours:
It's a bunch of possible color schemes for my supposedly "elaborate" center piece of my portfolio. Oh joy, another forest scene. On the whole I kinda winged it, but I think I'll stick with the middle left one. I'm pressed for time, so I don't think I should be too picky.
